Bayer Foundation Fellowships 2023

Bayer Foundation Fellowships are designed to enhance existing study programs (MSc, PhD, and medicine)
by providing additional funding for international placements or research activities that are
complimentary to current or future scientific studies.
• Non-Germany-based students must undertake fellowships within Germany.
• Germany-based students must undertake placements outside of Germany.
• Fellowships cannot be undertaken at commercial organizations (i.e. in the industry)

We offer three fellowships for outstanding masters, PhD, and medical students to undertake international research projects, internships & more. These fellowships enhance existing study programs by providing additional funding for international placements that complement current or future scientific studies. 

Otto Bayer Fellowships in Drug Discovery

For master or PhD students from all scientific disciplines, including pharmacy and data science, with fundamental or applied studies relevant to the pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare (over-the-counter) industries.

Bachelor students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible.

Jeff Schell Fellowships for Agricultural Science

For master or PhD students from all scientific disciplines, including data science, with fundamental or applied studies relevant to the Crop Science industry.

Bachelor students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible.

Carl Duisberg Fellowships for Medical Sciences

For all human & veterinary medicine students, master and PhD students in medical engineering, applied medical sciences and data science in medicine and public health.

Bachelor students and postdoctoral researchers in medical engineering applied medical science,
public health and data science in medicine are not eligible.

Applicants are eligible for up to 10,000€ in funding and can undertake fellowships for between 2 weeks and six months. People studying in Germany must undertake placements in a second country & those studying outside Germany must undertake their fellowships at a German research institution.

Application Procedure

Applications must be made in English.
• Applications must be made using the online application portal – via email, letter etc.
will not be considered.
• Incorrect, incomplete, or out-of-scope applications will not be considered.
• Applicants should apply only once per call. Multiple applications will result in all submissions
being rejected.

If your application is suitable for both the Otto Bayer Fellowships for Drug Discovery Sciences
and the Jeff Schell Fellowships in Agriculture Sciences, e.g., synthetic chemistry, please select
“Otto Bayer & Jeff Schell“in the application form. Your application will be considered in both
categories.

Application Requirements

• Project proposal including its relevance to advancing your field and/or associated industry (maximum 1750 characters, approx. 300 words).
• Description of your project’s potential relevance and impact on society (including the UN sustainability goals) and the potential societal response to your work (maximum 1750 characters, approx. 300 words).
• When applicable, a description of the collaborative and/or interdisciplinary of your fellowships and scientific proposal. 
• Personal statement including motivation for the application, personal and professional aspirations, and any additional relevant information (maximum 1750 characters, approx. 300 words). 
• The proposed budget for your fellowship (breakdown of all costs, e.g. travel; rent; exceptional costs etc.
• A 1-minute video of yourself recorded on your phone or computer highlighting why you would like to receive a Bayer Foundation fellowship and how it will support your career development.
