The Åland Islands Peace Institute is pleased to announce a new call for the Åland Peace Fellowship.

The Institute invites researchers in peace research, international law, political science or other relevant disciplines to apply for the Åland Peace Fellowship 2023.

For 2023 we will prioritise applications relevant to sustainability issues in territorial autonomies, including autonomous islands. The Peace Fellowship entails a research stay on the Åland Islands, lasting approximately two months in the autumn of 2023, as agreed.

Benefits

A Peace Fellowship comprises the following benefits:
• A return ticket (economy) from your place of residence to Mariehamn
• A monthly stipend of 1200 euro
• Accommodation in Mariehamn in a single-room apartment or guesthouse, alternatively, assistance in finding appropriate accommodation
• Working space and access to our small but specialized library
• The possibility of presenting your work at a public seminar

• A collegial atmosphere and the possibility of discussing your research and ideas with the Institute’s staff and networks
• The possibility to partake in internal or external seminars and events organised
by the Peace Institute as appropriate and agreed
• The possibility of conducting research by accessing key sources on the Åland Islands
• The possibility of publishing your work as part of our online open-access report series “Report from the Åland Islands Peace Institute” or the “Journal of Autonomy and Security Studies”, www.jass.ax
• The possibility of attending and/or contributing to a coming E-course, “Territorial Autonomy as a Tool for Diversity and Conflict Resolution – Lessons from the Åland Example”.

Application Requirement

Your application should include the following:
• a letter of motivation, including full contact details and an explanation of how a stay in the Åland Islands and the Peace Institute could contribute to your work and how you believe you can contribute to the work of the Institute
• a short outline (max 1.500 words) of the work you intend to undertake as a fellow at the Institute (including topic, relevance and methodology)
• a brief CV (max two pages)
• a recent writing sample (e.g. article, report, thesis).
A good command of either English or Swedish/Scandinavian is a prerequisite for fully benefiting from the fellowship.
