The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers offers Fellowships to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the research collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections, the Library is one of the world’s preeminent resources for study in anthropology, art, geography, history, languages and literature, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, sports, and urban studies.

Fellowship Details and Eligibility Criteria

  • The Cullman Center awards fifteen Fellowships annually to exceptional scholars and writers.
  • Eligible candidates include academics, independent scholars, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets), translators, and visual artists.
  • Foreign nationals who are proficient in English are welcome to apply.
  • Fellowship recipients are expected to primarily work at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the Library, rather than other divisions.
  • Individuals seeking funding for research leading to a degree are not eligible for the Fellowship.
  • The Cullman Center emphasizes top-quality writing and aims to facilitate dynamic communication about literature and scholarship.
  • The Fellowship term spans from September through May, and Fellows are required to work at the Center during this period.
  • Each Fellow delivers a lunchtime talk on their work-in-progress to other Fellows and invited guests.
  • Fellows may be invited to participate in additional programs at The New York Public Library.
