The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites applications for the 2026 In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme for Sub-Saharan African students pursuing Master’s or PhD studies within Africa.

This prestigious scholarship is part of DAAD’s long-term commitment to strengthening higher education systems and research capacity across Africa. The programme supports talented students who wish to study in their home country (In-Country) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region) at selected African partner universities.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the programme promotes regional collaboration, builds academic networks, and nurtures the next generation of African researchers and educators.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree (for Master’s applicants) or a Master’s degree (for PhD applicants) with excellent academic results.
  • Be admitted or enrolled at one of the DAAD-partner universities in Africa.
  • Demonstrate a strong motivation for academic research and a commitment to development.
  • Have obtained their last degree within the past six years.
  • Must not be a current recipient of another DAAD scholarship.
