The Deutsche Welle (DW) Akademie International Journalism Traineeship 2027/2028 is an 18-month paid program designed for emerging journalists from around the world who are passionate about telling stories that matter. Hosted by DW – Germany’s international broadcaster, the traineeship offers participants the chance to gain hands-on experience in multimedia journalism, international reporting, and digital storytelling within one of the world’s most respected media organizations.

The program combines academic training, newsroom practice, and field reporting. Trainees will work alongside seasoned journalists at DW’s headquarters in Bonn and Berlin, covering global issues such as climate change, migration, technology, and social justice. The traineeship also focuses on cross-cultural communication, media innovation, and ethical journalism, preparing participants for careers in international media.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • native speaker of one of DW’s languages with excellent English and good German language skills, or native English speaker with good German language skills, or native German speaker with excellent English language skills
  • completed university degree, college degree or apprenticeship
    (especially with a background in technology/IT, science, politics, economics or law)
  • But we are also looking for applicants from other fields, whether you are an IT specialist, lawyer, physician, mathematician, nurse, chef, pilot, football player or referee.
