The Mahathir Science Award (MSA) is positioned as the world’s most prestigious science award for tropical sciences and is bestowed on any scientist, institution or organization worldwide in recognition of contributions and innovations towards solving problems in the tropics through science and technology. The categories for the award are Tropical Agriculture, Tropical Architecture and Engineering, Tropical Medicine, and Tropical Natural Resources. It is awarded to the most deserving based on merit. As such, this extends beyond the boundaries of Malaysia in order to encourage excellence in tropical science that will accord direct benefits to countries in the tropics and indirectly to the global community.
One award is given out each year in one of the four categories. Award recipients receive USD100,000, a gold medal and a certificate, as well as the opportunity to work with the Mahathir Science Award Foundation to promote tropical sciences. The award is presented by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) or Prime Minister of Malaysia during an official ceremony in Kuala Lumpur with eminent leaders from the scientific community, ministries and science agencies, and industry leaders. members of the media and partners of the Foundation in attendance.
In 2005, the ”ASM Award for Scientific Excellence in Honour of Tun Dr Mahathir” was renamed as the Mahathir Science Award. In 2010, the Mahathir Science Award Foundation was set up to manage and oversee this prestigious award, maintaining its relationship with the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia (ASM). It is hoped that through this award, a new benchmark will be set for tropical sciences, and the profile of science in Malaysia and the tropics will rise to greater heights.

Eligibility Criteria

This award is bestowed on any scientist, institution or organisation worldwide in recognition of outstanding contributions and innovations towards solving problems in the tropics through science and technology and to be awarded to the most deserving based on merit.

The selection criteria for the Award take into account:

1) The originality of the candidate’s achievement(s)
2) The impact of candidate’s achievement(s), including future impact, on the Tropics
3) The significance of the candidate’s achievement(s) in solving the problems of the tropics by improving the quality of life and contributing to the region’s prosperity

Categories

The merits of the nominee will be assessed based on the materials provided by the nominator. Therefore, it is essential that the nominator completes the checklist of documents required for a complete nomination.
Nomination Checklist:
1) [COMPULSORY] Nomination form (completed all 14/15 components and signed declaration)
2) [COMPULSORY] Photo of the nominee(s)/ logo of the organisation (in high-resolution, not less than 1MB)
3) [COMPULSORY FOR NOMINATION OF ORGANISATION] Organisational Profile (general leaflet/one-pager on the nominated organisation)
4) [COMPULSORY] Letters of referral (at least two (2) letters of referral to support the nomination, additional letters of support would further strengthen the nomination)
5) [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED] Supporting documents to the 14/15 components in the nomination form (Further details on research/products/patents/awards/impact. This may include a full CV, news articles, media announcements, reports, photographs, extended list of publications etc.)

How to Nominate

The Mahathir Science Award is a high-level award that recognises the world’s best contributions to the tropics through science and technology.
The selection criteria for the Award take into account:

1) The originality of the candidate’s achievement(s)
2) The impact of candidate’s achievement(s), including future impact on the Tropics
3) The significance of the candidate’s achievement(s) in solving the problems of the tropics by improving the quality of life and contributing to the region’s prosperity

The Award has four categories, namely:
• Tropical Agriculture
• Tropical Architecture and Engineering
• Tropical Medicine
• Tropical Natural Resources

Among the four categories, two categories are contested yearly. The categories contested rotate every year. Nominees can be individuals, groups of no more than three individuals, or organisations.
