The Marlene and Paolo Fresco Scholarship for African Studies is a generous and competitive scholarship that aims to support and empower students from Africa who are interested in studying African Studies at Yale University. The scholarship is open to 10 students per year who are admitted to the Master of Arts in African Studies program at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University.

The scholarship is funded by the Marlene and Paolo Fresco Foundation, a philanthropic foundation that supports education, culture, health and social development initiatives around the world. The scholarship is named after Marlene and Paolo Fresco, a couple who have a deep passion and appreciation for Africa and its culture, history and people.

Benefits

The Marlene and Paolo Fresco Scholarship for African Studies is a full scholarship that covers the following expenses for the students:

  • Tuition fees for the entire duration of the master’s program (two years)
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses ($2,000 per month)
  • Health insurance
  • Travel costs to and from Yale University (up to $2,000 per year)
  • Visa fees
  • Laptop and books
  • Cultural and social activities

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Marlene and Paolo Fresco Scholarship for African Studies, you must:

  • Be a citizen and resident of an African country
  • Have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field of study
  • Have a strong academic record and a high level of English proficiency
  • Have a clear and well-defined research interest in African Studies
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to contribute to the development of Africa and its diaspora

Application Procedure

To apply for the Marlene and Paolo Fresco Scholarship for African Studies, you need to:

  • Fill out the online application form on the Yale University website
  • Upload your transcripts, diploma, CV, personal statement, two letters of recommendation and a writing sample
  • Write a research proposal of 1,000 words on a topic related to African Studies
